Hi I'm Keith and welcome to Lighter than You Started. It's Friday and today I'd like to begin with a slightly unusual suggestion. Perhaps you don't have to feel good about this week. Not yet anyway. We often reach Friday and begin looking for some kind of conclusion.
Keith:We reflect. We take stock. We try to put things into perspective. Perhaps we tell ourselves: It wasn't that bad. At least I learned something.
Keith:Next week would be better. And sometimes those thoughts genuinely help. Perspective can be wonderfully reassuring. But what if Friday arrives and somehow still doesn't feel okay? Perhaps the conversation hasn't been resolved.
Keith:Something you worked hard on didn't go the way you'd hoped. You're waiting for an answer. You made a mistake you're still thinking about. Or perhaps nothing particularly dramatic happened at all. You're simply tired and you're not yet ready to turn the week into something positive.
Keith:I wonder if we sometimes believe that reflection should lead to resolution. That if we thought about something properly we should feel better afterwards. But perhaps that's asking too much of reflection. Sometimes understanding something doesn't immediately change how it feels. You can understand why a decision was made and still feel disappointed by it.
Keith:You can know you did your best and still wish things had gone differently. You can accept that something is outside of your control and still feel frustrated. Two things can be true at once. Perhaps that's something we don't give ourselves enough room for. We often look for one final verdict.
Keith:Good week, bad week, over it, not over it, Fine. Not fine. But real life is rarely so tidy. Maybe you had a wonderful Wednesday and a terrible Thursday. Maybe something good happened at exactly the same time as something difficult.
Keith:Maybe you're grateful for one part of the week and deeply disappointed by another. You don't have to choose which feeling is the official one. You can carry both at least for now. Think about watching the sunset. There's a moment when the day hasn't quite dawn but night hasn't quite arrived either.
Keith:The sky holds both. Light and darkness. Neither needs to hurry the other way. Perhaps Friday can be a little bit like that. A space between what happened and what will eventually make of it.
Keith:We don't need to decide everything tonight. There's a phrase people sometimes use after a difficult experience. I've made my peace with it. I think that's a lovely expression. But perhaps we forget that peace isn't always something we can make on demand.
Keith:Sometimes it takes time. Sometimes it arrives gradually. And sometimes what we need first isn't peace. It's distance. A night's sleep.
Keith:A walk. A quiet weekend. A conversation with someone we trust. Or simply a few days in which we're not asking ourselves to work out how we feel about everything. Maybe the kindest thing you can say about this week is I'm not ready to decide what I think about it yet.
Keith:That's a doubt. You don't need to extract the lesson. You don't need to find a silver lining. You don't need to persuade yourself that something didn't matter and you don't have to carry it around all weekend just because it isn't resolved either. That's an interesting distinction.
Keith:We sometimes assume that putting something down means we're finished with it but it doesn't. You can put down a book halfway through a chapter. The story remains there waiting. Perhaps some thoughts can work like that too. You can say this still matters to me.
Keith:I'm still thinking about it but I don't need to think about it for the next forty eight hours. That's not avoidance. Sometimes it's simply rest and rest can change perspective in ways that more thinking cannot. How often have you wrestled with something late at night only to wake the next morning and find it looks slightly different? Nothing changed except you.
Keith:You rested. Your mind had some space. The emotional volume turned down a little. Perhaps that's what this weekend can offer. Not answers.
Keith:Space. And perhaps space is enough. Because Monday doesn't need Friday to have solved everything. Next week can begin even if this one ended with a question mark. Life doesn't organize itself into seven day stories for our convenience.
Keith:Some things begin on a Wednesday and finish three Tuesdays later. Some questions take months. Some feelings don't follow the calendar at all so perhaps we don't need to expect them to. As this Friday comes to an end if you feel good about the week enjoy that. If you feel proud of something notice it.
Keith:If it's something we're celebrating celebrate it. But if something still feels unfinished perhaps don't force a conclusion simply because the weekend has arrived. You can acknowledge it give it a place and then allow yourself to rest anyway. Because you don't need to resolve every feeling before you're allowed to stop thinking about it for a while. Sometimes peace begins not with finding the answer but we've given ourselves permission to leave the question alone until another day.
Keith:Today's thought for you. You don't need to feel better about the week yet. Thank you for sharing this week with me and as always I hope you end today feeling lighter than you started. Go gently and I'll see you tomorrow on the flip side. You can now listen to the lighter than You Started podcast on Alexa.
