Hi I'm Keith and welcome to Lighter Than You Started. It's Monday and today I'd like to talk about a word that seems to become increasingly common in our lives. Urgent. The urgent email. The urgent request.
Keith:The urgent phone call. The thing someone needs as soon as possible. Now sometimes things genuinely are urgent. They need our immediate attention. They can't reasonably wait.
Keith:But I wonder how often we find ourselves treating something as urgent simply because it arrived loudly. Monday mornings can be particularly good at this. You begin the day with an idea of what matters. Then you open your inbox and suddenly everyone else's priorities have arrived. A message marked 'Important' a meeting request A question someone would like answered.
Keith:A notification. Another notification. And before long the thoughtful plan you had for the day has quietly disappeared beneath a pile of other people's requests. Perhaps you've experienced that feeling. You've reached lunchtime and been incredibly busy but you're not entirely sure what you've actually moved forward.
Keith:That's because urgency and importance aren't always the same thing. Urgency says look at me now. Importance often speaks much more quietly. The important conversation you've been meaning to have. The piece of work that requires uninterrupted thought.
Keith:The relationship that deserves some attention. The decision that would benefit from ten calm minutes rather than ten hurried sessions. Those things rarely flash red on a screen. They wait patiently and because they wait sometimes we leave them waiting far too long. Imagine you're sitting in a cafe having an important conversation with someone you care about.
Keith:Your phone buzzes on the table. For a moment you have a choice. The person in front of you hasn't become less important but the phone has made itself more noticeable. That's the difference. Noticeable isn't the same as important.
Keith:Yet our attention doesn't always recognise the distinction. It naturally turns towards whoever's newest loudest or closest. There's nothing wrong with us for doing that. It's simply how attention works. But perhaps we can become a little more deliberate about where we place it.
Keith:Maybe one useful Monday question is does this need my attention now or does it simply want my attention now? There's a surprising amount of freedom in that distinction because not every email needs an immediate reply Not every notification needs immediately checking. Not every request has to move instantly to the top of your list. Sometimes the kindest response to yourself and to the quality of your work is I'll come back to that. That isn't ignoring responsibility it's choosing it.
Keith:You're deciding what deserves your best attention rather than allowing the loudest thing to claim it automatically. And perhaps there's something else worth remembering. When everything becomes urgent nothing really is. We lose our ability to distinguish between what genuinely needs us now and what can comfortably wait. So as this Monday unfolds perhaps notice what is calling for your attention.
Keith:Then notice what actually deserves it. They may be the same thing but they may not. You don't have to spend the entire day reacting. You can choose. You can pause.
Keith:You can allow some things to wait while you give your attention to something that matters more. Because being busy isn't always the same as moving forward and responding quickly isn't always the same as responding well. Today's thought for you. You don't need to treat everything as urgent. Thank you for sharing this moment with me and as always I hope you end today feeling lighter than you started.
Keith:Draw gently and I'll see you on the flip side tomorrow. Lighter Than You Started is a think of something publishing production.
