Hi I'm Keith and welcome to Lighter Than You Started. It's Tuesday. I'd like to begin with something you may recognise. Someone says something that catches you slightly off guard. Perhaps it was a passing comment.
Keith:A brief email. A look you're not quite sure how to interpret. The conversation ends. Life moves on. But with your mind well your mind decides it isn't quite finished.
Keith:Before long you're replaying the exchange. I wonder what they meant by that. Perhaps I should have answered differently. Maybe they were trying to tell me something. It's remarkable how quickly our minds begin writing the chapters that were never actually spoken.
Keith:We become the author, the editor, sometimes even the critic. Adding dialogue that never happened. Predicting endings that haven't arrived. Giving meaning to pauses that may have meant nothing at all. It's not because we're trying to make life complicated.
Keith:Quite the opposite. Our minds like stories. Stories help us make sense of the world. They create order. They provide explanations.
Keith:They're one of the ways we understand our experiences. The difficulty comes when we mistake the story we've created for the reality we're actually living. Think about watching the first half of a film. You wouldn't expect to know exactly how it's going to end after twenty minutes. You'd trust the story to unfold.
Keith:Yet in our own lives we often feel uncomfortable leaving anything unfinished. We want immediate explanations immediate certainty immediate conclusions and if they're going to arrive our imagination kind of offers to fill in the gaps. Sometimes it gets it right. Often it doesn't. Perhaps you've experienced that moment when someone eventually explained what they meant only to discover you'd spent two days worrying about something that was never there.
Keith:We've all done it. It's one of those wonderful human habits. Today's reflection isn't about ignoring your thoughts nor is it about pretending questions don't matter. It's simply an invitation to become a little more curious about the stories your mind is creating. When you notice yourself writing another chapter Perhaps pause for a moment and gently ask do I know this or have I just imagined it?
Keith:That's such a small question but it can make a remarkable difference. Because sometimes the answer will be I don't actually know. As strange enough not knowing can be a very peaceful place to stand. It leaves room for conversations for clarification for surprises for discovering that reality is often much kinder than the imagination predicted. So today if you notice your mind trying to finish another unfinished story perhaps allow a few pages to remain blank.
Keith:Life is still writing them. You don't have to. Today's thought for you. You don't need to finish every story in your mind. Thank you for sharing this moment and as always I hope you end today feeling lighter than you started.
Keith:Go gently and I'll see you tomorrow on the flip side. Lighter Than You Started is a think of something publishing production.
