Episode 212 - You Don't Need to Tie the Week Up with a Bow

Keith:

Hi I'm Keith and welcome to Lighter than You Started. It's Friday and as another week begins drawing to a close I'd like to explore something that many of us do without even noticing. We look for a neat ending. A sense of completion. A feeling that we've wrapped everything up nicely before the weekend arrives.

Keith:

It's as though we imagine every week should finish like the final chapter of a book. Questions answered. Problem solved. Tasks completed. Everything neatly in its place.

Keith:

Wouldn't that be satisfying? And yes every now and then life does give us weeks like that. But more often it doesn't. More often Friday arrives while conversations are still unfolding. Projects are still progressing.

Keith:

Plans are still taking shape. Questions are still patiently waiting for their answers. Life, it seems, is remarkably comfortable with unfinished sentences. We on the other hand not always. There's something about the human mind that enjoys closure.

Keith:

We like knowing where we stand. We like conclusions. Loose threads can feel uncomfortable. Perhaps that's why Friday sometimes carries a subtle pressure. A feeling that before we can properly enjoy the weekend we need to finish everything.

Keith:

Resolve everything. Understand everything. Yet life rarely follows that timetable. Some of this week's questions belong to next week. Some of today's uncertainties need more time than a Friday afternoon can offer.

Keith:

And some things simply aren't ready to be completed yet. Not because we've failed but because they're still becoming. Think about baking a loaf of bread. You can't rush it simply because you're hungry. The dough needs time to rise.

Keith:

The oven needs time to do its work. Trying to hurry the process doesn't improve the outcome. It usually does the opposite. Life has its own timings too. Relationships take time.

Keith:

Confidence takes time. Learning takes time. Healing takes time. Understanding takes time. Perhaps one of the wisest things we can do on a Friday is stop asking everything to arrive before it's ready.

Keith:

There can be a quiet peace in recognizing that this week doesn't have to finish with every question answered. Maybe all it asks is that we pause long enough to notice where we are. Not where we hoped we'd be. Not where we imagined we should be. Just where we are.

Keith:

Because there's something wonderfully honest about that. You're part way through some things

Keith:

at the beginning of others near the end of a few.

Keith:

That's not untidy. That's simply what a lived life looks like. So as this week gently comes to an end perhaps resist the temptation to tie it up with a neat little bow. Perhaps allow a few loose ribbons to remain. Trust that they'll still be there when the time is right.

Keith:

The weekend isn't a reward for finishing life. It's simply another part of living it. Today's talk for you. You don't need to tie the week up with a bow. Thank you for sharing this week with me and as always I hope you end the day feeling lighter than you started.

Keith:
