Episode 211 - You Don't Need Everyone to Understand You

Keith:

Hi I'm Keith and welcome to Lighter Than You Started. It's Thursday and today I'd like to talk about something that most of us experience from time to time. The feeling of wanting to be understood. Perhaps you've explained your reasons but someone still sees things differently. Perhaps you've tried to describe how you feel only to realise your words haven't quite landed in the way you'd hoped.

Keith:

Or perhaps you've walked away from a conversation wishing the other person could simply see the situation through your eyes. It's a very human desire. We all want to feel seen. To feel heard. To know that our thoughts and intentions have been understood.

Keith:

There's comfort in that. Connection grows when people understand one another. But I wonder if we sometimes make life harder by believing that everyone has to understand us before we can feel at peace. Because the truth is no one has lived your life exactly as you have. No one carries your memories your experiences, your hopes, your disappointments.

Keith:

They've walked a different road and because of that they'll sometimes see the very same situation from a completely different viewpoint. That doesn't automatically make either of you wrong. It simply makes you different. Sometimes we spend so much energy trying to persuade someone to understand us that we forget an important question. Have I explained myself as honestly and kindly as I can?

Keith:

If the answer is yes perhaps you've already done your part. After that understanding becomes something you can invite but not something you can control. There's a quiet freedom in recognizing the difference. Think about standing on opposite sides of a hill. You're both describing the same landscape but you're seeing different views.

Keith:

Neither person is lying. Neither person is trying to be difficult. You're simply standing in different places. Life can be like that and perhaps wisdom isn't always convincing someone to stand where you are. Perhaps it's accepting that they may continue seeing a different view.

Keith:

That doesn't mean your perspective has no value nor does it mean that theirs doesn't. It simply reminds us that understanding isn't something we can force. Sometimes it grows over time. Sometimes it arrives after another conversation. Sometimes it never fully comes and life asks us to continue anyway.

Keith:

There can be something deeply peaceful about releasing responsibility for everyone else's understanding. You can still be thoughtful, still be honest, still communicate with kindness but you no longer have to carry the impossible task of making every person see the world exactly as you do. That's a burden no one was ever meant to carry. So today if you find yourself wishing someone understood you a little better Perhaps remind yourself that your worth isn't measured by how many people completely agree with you. Sometimes being understood by a few people is enough.

Keith:

Sometimes understanding yourself is enough. And sometimes peace begins when we stop chasing perfect agreement. Today's thought for you. You don't need everyone to understand you. Thank you for sharing this moment and as always I hope you end today feeling lighter than you started.

Keith:

Drove gently and I'll see you on the flip side tomorrow. Lighter Than You Started is a think of something publishing production.
