Hi I'm Keith and welcome to Lighter Than You Started. It's Wednesday and by the middle of the week many of us have collected something we didn't set out to carry. Loose ends. The email we still need to reply to. The conversation we haven't quite finished.
Keith:The idea that's waiting for our attention. The job we started but couldn't complete. None of them are particularly heavy on their own but together they begin to feel like a pocket full of small stones. Individually you might barely notice them. Collect enough of them though and suddenly you're wondering why everything feels so heavy.
Keith:Perhaps that's because loose ends don't just occupy our diaries they occupy our minds. It's remarkable how much energy unfinished things can demand. Not because we're apt to be working on them but because a part of us is quietly trying not to forget them. Every now and then one pops back into our thoughts. Don't forget that!
Keith:You still need to sort that out. Remember to jump back to this and even if we can't do anything about it right now it still asks for a little of our attention. There's nothing unusual about that. Life is rarely completed in neat tidy chapters. Most of us are living with a number of unfinished things.
Keith:Projects, plans, questions, conversations. That's simply part of being human. But perhaps we sometimes make life harder by believing we should carry every loose end ourselves. As though if we stopped thinking about it for a while we'll somehow become less responsible. Yet carrying something in your mind isn't the same as caring about it.
Keith:You can care deeply about something without holding it in your thoughts every waking moment. In fact some things benefit from being gently set down for a while. Not abandoned. Not ignored. Just trusted to wait until you're ready.
Keith:Think about a jigsaw puzzle. When you stop for the evening you don't expect to finish it in one sitting. You simply leave it where it is knowing you'll return when you can. Life is rather similar. Not every unfinished piece needs to be completed today.
Keith:Some are perfectly content waiting until tomorrow or next week or whenever the time is right. Perhaps one of the kindest questions we can ask ourselves today is this: Which of these loose ends actually needs me right now? Because the answer is probably not all of them. Some can wait. Some can be written down.
Keith:Some can be delegated. Some may even disappear entirely. And when we stop treating every unfinished thing as equally urgent, something unexpected happens. We create space. Space to enjoy the conversation we're having.
Keith:Space to notice the afternoon sunshine. Space to be fully present with the people in front of us. After all life isn't only found in completing things It's also found in living while some things remain incomplete. So if you're carrying a handful of loose ends today perhaps choose just one. Give it your attention then allow the others to rest.
Keith:They don't all need carrying at once and neither do you. Today's thought for you. You don't need to carry every loose end. Thank you for sharing this moment and as always I hope you end today feeling lighter than you started. Go gently and I'll see you tomorrow on the flip side.
